Payroll and Employees

It seems that during this time of year people begin reviewing their payroll setup. In other words, by now, you are probably wrapping up your taxes and beginning to plan for this next year. I even got a call yesterday from a pastor thinking of opting out of Social Security. We get tons of payroll related questions this time of year, so we figured we would try to explain some of the more hot topics. If you have questions that we don’t address over the next few posts, feel free to contact us and we’ll do our best to help out.

In this section, we will discuss the importance in distinguishing between independent contractors (such as band members) and employees (both full-time and part-time) of the church. We will also briefly discuss the quarterly and year end payroll filing requirements of both. A discussion of ordained employees will follow and will include the issues relating to employee vs. self-employee status, housing allowances, social security allowances and other allowances.
