Why are adults so boring?

Little Girl Inside TunnelWe were at some friend’s house the other day, in their back yard hanging out, and their 3 year old kid was playing. He was literally running back and forth in the yard and running in circles until he fell over. He was having the time of his life, all by himself, with NOTHING! No toys, no games… NOTHING! It was amazing to see someone, a human, running in circles laughing; his head off, having the time of his life.

Why are adults so boring? What happens to us that all of the sudden we have to wear button down shirts and pressed pants in order to be “normal”?

I was meeting with a friend the other day, at Starbucks, and the guys next to us were in suits and ties having the exact same “business meeting” that we were having. We were talking about marketing strategy and so were they! I was wearing jeans a a T-Shirt and so was Carlos! Perhaps those guys are smarter and more successful than Carlos and I?

Bottom line, it’s not about the clothes we wear, it’s about what’s inside of a person! I believe that every single one of us has the nature of a child! We all just want to run around in circles and laugh our heads off with no cares or worries in the world.

Why are adults so freaking boring? Why don’t we live lives like children and run around in circles in our backyard with no cares or worries? Imagine 5 adults running in circles in the backyard! I bet it would be the most fun they’ve had in YEARS!

Life doesn’t have to be that way! I think, life is what WE make of it! Of course, God orchestrates everything, but it’s how we respond to that. In fact, perhaps Jesus presented himself like this? Perhaps Jesus WANTS us to be like a child?

I think we need to be real with ourselves… I think people try way too hard to be like society so that they can fit in and be “successful”. Perhaps you’ll be MORE successful if you’re ANTI adult? If we all have an “inner child” then wouldn’t we be real with ourselves if we let that child manifest itself in our daily lives? (By the way, I’m not negating the need for responsibility!)

Cory… you’re 16 dude! Love God, love people and have FUN!

So, I am 42 and I have NEVER been boring nor ever will be. I shop at thrift stores, have jet black hair, laugh till it hurts everyday and I love to collect rocks, drink red wine, talk about philosophy while wearing a tutu, and love my kids and husband with a sense of joy that permeates everything we do and say. Am I in need of “fitting in” no way! In a sense I am more successful than most with a 20 year marriage and 2 teenagers who still hold our hands, cry when they need to and tell us everything that matters to them. People my age act like they are enduring their life, hating their place in the world and expecting the worst from their marriage and their kids. Lighten up! Skip, jump, wear whatever the hell makes you feel beautiful and fun and most of all, love love love everyone, give it away and it will come back to you in the most amazing ways.
